What is Scoliosis?Â
Scoliosis is a progressive three-dimensional spinal deformity that can develop at pretty much any point in life, and the exact cause is often idiopathic (unknown).Â
Untreated scoliosis can lead to:Â
- Vital function issues: respiratory and cardiac complications (if the thoracic spine is implicated)Â
- Locomotion limitations: pain and reduced mobilityÂ
- Aesthetic concerns: feeling uncomfortable in your body as a result of postural changes and your overall appearanceÂ
- Social-emotional challenges: poorer mental health statesÂ
Not sure if you or a loved one has scoliosis? Try the Scoliosis Screening App or contact us for Scoliosis Consultation in Calgary (call to book). Early detection is key to the best long-term health outcomes!

What is Kyphosis?Â
Kyphosis is an exaggerated forward rounding of the upper back, most often seen in the thoracic spine. It can occur at any age, but is especially common during adolescence or later in life due to degeneration or postural habits. There are different types of kyphosis – including postural, congenital, and Scheuermann’s kyphosis – and the underlying cause plays a big role in how it progresses.Â
Untreated kyphosis can lead to:Â
- Vital function issues: such as compromised breathing or digestion due to altered thoracic structureÂ
- Locomotion limitations: stiffness, discomfort, and reduced range of motionÂ
- Aesthetic concerns: visible rounding of the upper back or hunched posture that may impact body confidenceÂ
- Social-emotional challenges: such as lowered self-esteem, especially during adolescent yearsÂ
For those with kyphosis, we offer KyphoBrace, a specialized brace designed by ScoliCare for excessive forward curvature of the spine.Â

Scoliosis Treatment Without SurgeryÂ
We are proud to be one of the few providers in Western Canada offering ScoliBrace, an advanced, over corrective 3D bracing system that can help reshape the spine over time (in eligible cases when there is high compliance with brace wear recommendations), while allowing for comfortable daily wear. Unlike traditional bracing methods, ScoliBrace focuses on postural improvement and spinal correction rather than just preventing progression. This is accomplished by implementing spinal coupling forces into the makeup of the brace, rather than the conventional 3-point pressure system.Â
If you are concerned about scoliosis, don’t wait. Early treatment provides the best opportunity for long-term spinal health.Â
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can scoliosis be prevented?
Currently, there is no known way to prevent scoliosis, However, early detection and proper treatment can significantly improve spinal alignment, posture, and overall quality of life. Regular check-ups and screenings, especially for children and adolescents, are key to catching scoliosis early and managing it effectively.
Is kyphosis the same as scoliosis?
Not quite. While both are spinal deformities, scoliosis involves a three-dimensional sideways curve of the spine, whereas kyphosis refers to an excessive forward rounding of the upper back. It’s possible to have both conditions at the same time (called kyphoscoliosis), but they’re distinct in how they look, feel, and progress.
Can kyphosis be treated?
Yes, kyphosis is treatable, and early intervention can make a big difference. Treatment options depend on the type and severity of the curve, as well as age and overall health. Mild postural kyphosis can often be improved with exercises, chiropractic care, and lifestyle changes. Structural kyphosis, such as Scheuermann’s disease, may require a more comprehensive approach, including the use of a corrective brace like the KyphoBrace. Dr. Tim will guide you through the best options for your unique spine.
Can scoliosis improve on its own without treatment?
No, scoliosis does not correct itself over time. In fact, without treatment, the condition is likely to worsen, especially in children and teens whose spines are still growing. Understanding key risk factors for curve progression allows us to know just how important seeking early care is to slow progression and achieve the best possible outcomes (which can be curve stabilization and even reduction). The good news is that scoliosis is treatable, and with the right approach, such as active monitoring, targeted exercises, chiropractic care and/or bracing, significant improvements can be made.Â
How does the ScoliBrace work, and what makes it different from other scoliosis braces?
The ScoliBrace is a revolutionary 3D custom bracing system designed to actively correct scoliosis rather than just slow its progression. Unlike traditional braces that focus only on stopping curve progression, the ScoliBrace works by guiding the spine into a more natural alignment using a unique over-corrective approach. It is fully customized using 3D imaging, in-house X-rays, and postural scans to ensure a perfect design for each patient. Dr. Tim is specially trained to order, fit, and modify the ScoliBrace, ensuring optimal comfort and possibly corrective outcomes for children, teens, adults and seniors.Â
What is the KyphoBrace, and who might benefit from it?
The KyphoBrace is a specialized corrective brace designed to help manage certain types of kyphosis, such as Scheuermann’s disease. Just like the ScoliBrace, it uses 3D imaging to create a custom fit and works by gently guiding the spine into a healthier alignment. It’s most often recommended for growing teens with progressive curves, but it may also benefit adults experiencing discomfort due to postural or structural kyphosis. Dr. Tim will determine if the KyphoBrace is a good fit based on your spinal assessment and treatment goals.
Who is a good candidate for the ScoliBrace?
The ScoliBrace is designed for children, teens, adults, and seniors with scoliosis who are looking for a non-surgical treatment option. Dr. Tim performs a comprehensive Initial Scoliosis Assessment to determine if the ScoliBrace is the right solution for you.Â
Is wearing the ScoliBrace uncomfortable?
While it may take some time to adjust, the ScoliBrace is custom fitted for maximum comfort. Unlike traditional rigid braces, it is designed to be patient-friendly, allowing for easier breathing and movement. Most patients adapt within a few weeks, and Dr. Tim ensures a proper fit with adjustments if needed. It is designed to allow you to go about your normal daily routines!Â
How long do I need to wear the ScoliBrace?
The length of time you’ll need to wear the ScoliBrace depends on your age, the severity of your scoliosis, and your treatment goals. For children, bracing is typically recommended until they stop growing, with the recommended wear time being up to 23 hours per day, removing it for activities like sports or showering. For adults, the recommended wear time can be as little as 4-6 hours per day for pain relief, or a minimum of 18 hours per day when the goals are more corrective in nature. Dr. Tim will create a personalized wear schedule to ensure the best possible results for your unique case.Â
Are there different types of ScoliBraces?
Yes! For example, there is a low-profile ScoliBrace that still uses the same overcorrecting technology, but does not extend up into the torso (this may be an option for lone lumbar curves). There is also a ScoliBrace that can be adapted to someone who spends most of their time in a wheelchair.Â
Can I do chiropractic care with the ScoliBrace?
Yes! Chiropractic care can be an excellent complement to bracing. Regular adjustments help maintain spinal mobility, improve posture, and support overall well-being throughout the bracing process. Dr. Tim provides a holistic approach to scoliosis care, integrating bracing with chiropractic adjustments as needed.Â
